Mr. J.T. Norton passed away on February 12, 2004 at his home in Montgomery. He was outside and had a heart attack. He is featured in A Montgomery Railroad Worker Album. He was a switchman for A&WP then CSX. He retired a few days before he had forty five years of service in 1981. He was known and liked by many and will be missed as a railman, neighbor and friend!

City of Montgomery Master Planning: The Sasaki Group is approaching completion of its plan for Downtown and Riverfront Development. OAR plans for developing the WofA Shops as a major attraction is an important feature of both scenarios for the development of North Montgomery.
Union Station Development: In connection with a Federal grant with which the City has completed a restoration of Union Station's grand passenger shed (1897), plans are now underway to fulfill the transportation museum component of the grant. OAR Board members are working closely with City officials to coordinate the development of this project with the WofA Shops project. This is a key development that, if well-implemented, will facilitate Montgomery-Selma excursions, and excursions to east Montgomery.
OAR joins forces with the Lightning Route Centennial Committee: For over 15 years, a Montgomery lawyer, Craig Cornwell, and members of the Lightning Route Centennial Committee have built a successful track record of support and action (rubber-tired tourist trolleys) in the City. New routes have been formed that carry visitors to important historic and tourist sites in downtown Montgomery. OAR and the Lightning Route forces are now working together to advocate the return of a rail trolley, and the use of the Union Station Shed as a multi-modal facility for a variety of rail activities.
New photos uncovered: OAR has recently received a set of slides taken in 1960-61 by "Nookey" Davis, a former WofA Shops employee. Several of these are aerial shots that have permitted us the most complete view to date of the shops when they were in use. Look for some of these views to appear by early March on this website.

December - 2000
The City of Montgomery recently hired the Sasaki Group (Boston, MA) to prepare a master plan for Downtown and Riverfront Development. OAR's proposals to be a major cultural attraction in this plan have been well-received thus far. The plan should be complete by April, 2001.
Plans are underway for a major effort to interview former employees of Montgomery railroads, the Tuskegee RR, and the Birmingham & Southeastern RR this coming summer (2001). The project will include a particular effort to discover and interview former black employees, though it will include any former employees, directors, or managers as the time frame will permit. We expect to get lots of good stories out of this!
Barry Howard Limited is developing the site plan for OAR as well as the initial cost estimates for development.
